Beer of the Week: Fria Cerveza Especial (Amsterdam Brewery, Toronto)

English Author G.K Chesterson (you may know him as the creator of the Father Brown mystery series) once said: “Let a man walk ten miles steadily on a hot summer's day along a dusty English road, and he will soon discover why beer was invented.” At Ontario Brew Review, we certainly agree! In that spirit, I decided to try a beer truly designed for the strangely stifling Ontario heat. The Fria Cerveza Especial, brewed by local favourite, Amsterdam Brewery in Toronto.

After a long day at work, I was excited to try this beer, which seem perfectly suited for a refreshing, and relaxing sitdown on my patio. It is a light, golden yellow beer, with about an inch of foamy head. It is what you’d expect from a cerveza, but a little dryer than what you might get elsewhere. It has a mild flavour of cereal grain malts, and the slightest hint of hops. It was clean, crisp, light drinking and refreshing. If you have a chance to pick it up at your LCBO or Beer Store, definitely do. I prefer it over the more popular Corona, or Modelo options. Especially considering you can support a local Ontario brewer, and at $3.15 for a tallboy, its priced the same as the imports. However, I wish that it had a stronger citrus flavour. Given the heavy use of citrus in the description, I was expecting a strong flavour. Instead, it was very, very mild. If I hadn’t been looking for it, I might not have noticed the flavour. With that in mind, take a chance on an above average local cerveza, and enjoy it during a day in the sun!
